Sisters and brothers,
We join with our member churches, our ecumenical partners and all people of faith to condemn the attacks in Kenya on 2 April 2015. We ask for prayers for our sisters and brothers in Kenya, especially those who are grieving the loss of loved ones.
Churches all over the world celebrated Easter, and the Spirit of this feast fed our hopes for justice and peace. Our sisters and brothers in our member churches in Kenya shared with us their pain and cry for support. As a worldwide family we believe in the power of life, we believe that death was defeated at the empty tomb and we affirm the supremacy of love. We promote communion and solidarity as the basis for the family and hope for all to live with abundant life.
It is in the midst of the Good Friday cry, “How long, O Lord?” that our sisters and brothers in Kenya have shared with us their pain and call for support in the recent terror attack. One hundred forty-eight individuals were killed, and 79 were injured in an attack on university students in Garrisa. It is reported that almost all of the 148 individuals killed were students, and that Christians were targeted on the basis of their faith. Twenty-two of the students who were killed were students of the Christian Student Union Fellowship who were praying at the time of the attack.
We join with our sisters and brothers in Kenya who have cried out: “Our hearts are bleeding, and more so for the parents and relatives of the 148 dead people. Pray for wisdom, for our president, and the leaders as they deal with this very difficult situation.”
As the Good Friday darkness is overcome by the light of Easter, the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, so too our hope rests in a future where all have life in abundance and where justice and peace will rule over hate.
Yours in Christ,
Chris Ferguson (Rev.) General Secretary
